Research Assignment

“life inspires art”  ~  “art interprets life”

1) The short story “The Curse” by Andre Dubus as compared with “Why People Don’t Help in a Crisis” by Draley and Latane.

2) Poe’s short story “Masque of the Red Death” -- one theory of science fiction writers and the writers of the bizarre is that they also interpret or predict events. One source names Jules Verne as having predicted a positive, technological future, while H.G. Wells warned against “science gone mad.” The comparison article for “Red Death” is “Averting the Next Pandemic,” which concerns avian influenza, its potential as a pandemic and research being done on the virus.

  • 1,000-word paper

  • total of five sources, three additional to those above

  • context of the work—who wrote it and when
