Acceptable Use of Electronic Resources

The Augusta R. Kolwyck Library provides computers to support the educational mission of the library. Computer users should comply with this policy and with the following:

ACCEPTABLE USE

Chattanooga State students, faculty and staff who are doing college-related research have priority in using library computers.  Library staff may ask those doing other things to yield those computers.

UNACCEPTABLE USE - DEFINITIONS AND EXAMPLES

Chattanooga State 2006-2007 Student Handbook "Acts of Misconduct: Misuse of Computers" (p. 56) states the following policy:

Unauthorized or inappropriate use of computers is prohibited. Such use includes, but is not limited to, damaging or altering records or programs; furnishing false information; invading the privacy of another user by using files, programs or data without authorization; engaging in disruptive, harassing and annoying behavior; and any unauthorized use of computer hardware, software, accounts, passwords or keywords."

  • Viewing obscene, pornographic, sexually explicit, or offensive material
  • Violating copyright laws
  • Gambling
  • Excessive game playing
  • Excessive printing
UNACCEPTABLE USE - LIBRARY ACTIONS

Library staff may ask any person to cease using library computers inappropriately and will contact College Security if inappropriate use persists. Continued violation of the acceptable use of library computers may lead to disciplinary action under College regulations.

While the library does not monitor or control the information accessed through the Internet, the library "is able and reserves the right to monitor and / or log all network activity of users without notice, including all e-mail and Internet communications. Users should have no reasonable expectation of privacy in the use of these resources." (TBR Policy 1:08:10:00)

The library does not assume responsibility for content found on the Internet.

GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR COMPUTER USE

  • As a courtesy, please limit use of computer workstations to 20 minutes when others are waiting.
  • Limit printing to 25 pages.  Email documents, articles, and websites rather than printing them.
  • Bring USB flash drives, CDs or other removable storage media and download files to them.
  • Abide by limits set by library staff as situations require.
