¨ Observations from visits to Lee University and ETSU:
a) GET AS MUCH EXTRA TRAINING AS POSSIBLE – well worth it
b) Would like to know more about how faculty, staff received new system
c) For upgrades, can involve alterations to graphics on web page; Endeavor
does have server available to preview page after upgrade (what I understood)
d) Little/no role of reference librarians in implementation - surprising
e) Lee Univ. – notebook for various depts.(grant funded) – lunch time
workshops
f) ETSU – use SQL for ad hoc reporting; perl script for new books list
[Would like to and need to learn SQL &/or perl scripting]
g) Use e-mail to send out standard notices, e.g. overdues
¨ Questions for Endeavor
a) Licensing issues if we decide to have links to some databases from
OPAC?
b) Schedule for updates – what’s expected of to keep our web page consistent?
c) Do they provide any training for implementing with staff/faculty?
¨ Notes Taken
Lee University Visit:
Able to link to variety of things – still working on this (need
to talk to Sturgeon)
Tape backups; done daily
Let Endeavor support know priority of requests when contacting
them
ALL Machines have 128 Mb RAM and 333 MHz processors
Microsoft Access helpful for writing reports; canned reports
not useful
Reading logs – server e-mails sent to who is charge of server;
can include errors
**Customized Notebook for workshop – promotes other library services
in addition to screen captures of new catalog – invited specific departments
to this
Need to contact reference librarian or Frances re: reference
staff role?
ETSU visit:
Questionnaire to fill out for data conversion
Item type refers to patron type and this works to a policy (determines
length of time for checkout)
Maintenance of SOLARIS box covered by Endeavor
Have backup server when Endeavor server gets upgrades
Upgrades can take as long as 2 days depending on size of database
Use of “mirror” to allow public catalog when upgrades take place
Reports – did not modify the “canned” circulation reports
Access will be useful for doing the reports
A pop-up note appears in Endeavor’s circulation module for overdue
Reference Librarian did not like having to scroll down in public screen
