Health and Wellness Project--Spring 2008

Assignment:  Students will research one specific topic related to one of these three Dimensions of Wellness:  Physical, Emotional, or Social.    Students will develop an essential question that will result in the development of a plan of action or a personal decision.  The essential question might be phrased:

What plan can I develop to...? (ex., lose weight, keep to my budget, decrease stress, reduce test anxiety, conserve energy, be less aggressive, etc.)

How can I...? (ex. manage my time, increase my memorization skills, control my anger, save money, etc.)

What is the best way for me to...? (manage my diabetes, overcome shyness, improve my study habits, etc.)

The process will include these steps:

1. Research topics in the library
2. Evaluate the articles for their valid content, authority, and currency. 
3. Choose articles based on the evaluation criteria and how you believe that the plan will work for you.


 

I.  Understand the difference between a journal and a magazine.
 


 

II.  Use General OneFile to find information from magazines and newspapers.
                    (You will need passwords for off-campus access to this database.)

1. Start with the Subject Guide Search and type in your topic in one or two words.

For example, Your question might be:

    "How can I use less energy and save money while protecting the environment?"

Your Subject search term is energy conservation

The result of a Subject Guide Search will display like this:

            Energy Conservation (9815)                            9815 (articles)
                 Subdivisions   |   Related subjects

 

 

2. Choose the Subdivisions category to see how the 9,815 articles have been divided into specific topics, such as:

            Analysis        144 (articles)
            Methods        770 (articles)
            Product Information       102 (articles)

 

   

3. Click on one of the subdivision topics to view a list of article citations that look like this:

Five low-cost ways to reduce your heating bill. Chanel A. Lee. Black Enterprise 38.7 (Feb 2008): p147(1). (606 words). 

8 easy projects for instant energy savings. Gary Reysa. Mother Earth News 226 (Feb-March 2008): p54(6). (2807 words)
