Assignment: Students will become familiar with the process of using the catalog, finding a book, and checking it out. The students will each have two topics, one a "personal interest" topic and one an "academic" topic and will:

search the catalog for a book on each topic
find two appropriate books
use the call numbers to locate them on the shelves
answer questions about the books
learn how to find specific information in any book by using a table of contents and an index.

1. Search the catalog for books to check out.

Click the tab.
Type your topic in the search box.
Limit your results to Main Library for books that you are able to check out.
Sort by: (optional)
Check the STATUS for books that are available.

2. Use the Table of Contents (located in the front) of a book to:

Understand what general content information is contained in the book.
Understand how the book is organized from front to back.
Know how to access information quickly.
Know if the book will be useful for you.
Organize your own thoughts about a subject you need to research.

3. Use the Index (located in the back) of a book to:

See a list (usually alphabetical) of specific topics within the book.
Know which exact pages to turn to for these specific topics.
Learn new vocabulary related to the book's topics.

4. Other parts of a book include:

Title Page
Publishing Information and Copyright notice
Forward--found at the beginning and written by someone other than the author
Preface--found at the beginning and written by the author to describe the reasons for writing the book
Introduction--found at the beginning and written by the author to describe an overview of the contents
