Assignment Description

Essay #3

English 1020, M/W –Spring, 2013


Possible Essay Topics:

-          What do the essays, stories, and documentary that we’ve read/watched this semester reveal about education in America? In what ways is this system succeeding and in what ways is it failing? Selections include "The Lottery, part 1 and part 2," "I Have a Dream," Maya Angelou's "Graduation," and the film "Waiting for Superman."


-          How is public education stacked against the lower- and middle-classes, the impoverished, immigrants, minority groups, etc.?


-          What impact does secondary level private education have on high school graduates from a private OR public school background?

Paper Particulars 

Maintain an academic writing voice for each essay in this course. Be sure that you have:

-          Formed an opinion instead of riding the fence

-          Used evidence from the text as support.

-          Be sure to document quotations from the story correctly.

-          Avoided using 1st and 2nd person pronouns.

-          Included an argument-driven thesis statement at the end of your introduction.

-          Started each paragraph with a clear topic sentence.

-          Included a creative title


Formatting requirements:

-          750-1000 words

-          Double-spaced

-          12-point Times New Roman font

-          One-inch margins


Research: Use at least 2 citations from the texts assigned in class and at least 2 citations from at least one outside source. Follow MLA citation for quotes, paraphrasing, in-text citations, and the works cited page entry.


Due Dates:

Wednesday, March 13: Copy of draft (electronic or hard copy) due for peer review.

Monday, March 18: Final draft due on eLearn by the beginning of class. No paper copy required.|
