Find a CJS article that explains the test of actionable negligence.

1. Locate the General Index that has the keyword you want to find, in this case "negligence."

2. Locate "negligence" in the General Index.
Look under the subdivisions for "Actionable negligence."
Then find under it "test of actionable negligence."
Note Negligence § 22 in bold.  This is the term you want to find within the larger set.

    General Index volume has:

   NEG

      NEGLIGENCE--Cont'd
      Actionable negligence--Cont'd
             retrospect, Negligence § 52
             risks, Negligence § 24
safer method, possibility of, Negligence § 28
             special relationship, Negligence § 42
test of actionable negligence, Negligence § 22

3. Look on the spine in the CJS set that would contain "Negligence 22."
The topics are alphabetical.  Note the range of section numbers on the spine.

4. Within the CJS volume that contains negligence, find § 22.

Note: Sometimes the topic is abbreviated in the index.  In the following example, "MuncCorp" stands for Municipal Corporations.  Look for "Municipal Corporations" in the larger CJS set.  Then find the section 1453:

STREETS AND PUBLIC WAYS
  Easements
abandonment of streets, MuncCorp § 1453
