ENGL2410: Literature of the Western World I--Mr. Joel Henderson
Library Instructor:  Tisa Houck

Assignment:  The course requirements for Western Literature I stipulate that a research project must be completed.  In this course, you will not be doing a traditional research paper.  Instead, you will be creating an annotated bibliography.  The reverse side of your handout gives examples of an annotated bibliography.  The bibliography should include only sources written about works by your author.  In other words, you won’t include biographies on your list.  Nor would you include books by the author you chose.  Secondary sources only should appear on your annotated bibliography.  Your sources should deal with your author’s work that we read in class.  Since annotation means a short summary paragraph, I suggest that you deal solely in journal articles or essays from collections in book form.  Your entries will consist of two parts: an MLA formatted bibliographic citation and a summary paragraph.  Make sure to use correct MLA format when citing your ten sources.  When writing the summary paragraph, you should attempt to capture the author’s thesis and main subpoints.  Please choose one of the following authors.  Only two of you may choose each author.  Each of you is responsible for finding and summarizing ten (10) different articles that were written later than 1950. Author choices are on a first come, first served basis.

Homer-The Iliad
Homer-The Odyssey
Virgil-Aeneid
Moses-Old Testament (as assigned)
Dante-The Inferno
Sir Gawain and the Green Knight
Chaucer-The Canterbury Tales (as assigned)
Petrarch-Poems (as assigned)
Shakespeare-Poems (as assigned)
Donne-Poems (as assigned)
Milton-Paradise Lost
Erasmus-Praise of Folly
Machiavelli-The Prince
